Our Past Intern Diaries

INTERN 01

3-4 buckets of water, is it enough?

In 2015, three social science students from UNIMAS did their internship with us. They spent three months in Long Jaik. Here were some pictures that they took.

INTERN 02

We can do this!

Our intern was tasked to write everyday during their three-months internship. Here’s an excerpt from her journal:

20/9/2016 Thursday. Pagi tadi saya tidak mandi sebab sangat sejuk. Malam pun sangat sejuk walaupun kampung tiada elektrik. Hari ini kami mengikut orang tanam padi. Orang kampung berduruk bersama-sama. Lelaki ‘nugal’ dan perempuan ‘nenih’.

We survived!!

In 2016, we sent two UNIMAS student for an internship to Long Palai. Here’s what written in one of our intern’s journal:

“18/8/2016. We went to Apdon’s house and met with Ukun Kuleh and family. They greeted us with opened arms. Ukun Kuleh showed his masterpiece of wooden birds and dried bird’s head and legs. “

INTERN 04

We nailed it!

As our intern spent three months in Long Jaik, they learn a thing or two about the culture and customs of the villagers. In our intern’s journal, she wrote about Pantang of Penans.

“The sound of a bird, U’at, is one of the most scary sound for them. it is actually a type of owl and it sounds similar to a puppy. To them, this bird signifies there is a tiger behind as it always fly in front of the harimau.”

Where is everybody?

Excerpt written by our intern in their journal:

“It was pouring rain today. So cold. The water was ice-cold than the usual but still the view of the foggy forest was majestic this moment. It rained the whole day and so the road was all muddy”

Photo was taken by our interns during their internship in Long Lawen in 2018.

INTERN 07

How do I do this food intake survey?

In 2019, we sent three students to Kampung Nyegol, Bengoh for two months. For their internships, they had to record food consume by the villagers daily.

Here are pictures by our interns and the activities they took part in during their internship.

INTERN 08

Work, work, work, work!

Here are some photos taken by the interns during their internship in Kampung Sting.

Let’s do this!

Day 50. Menghitung hari kami mau balik saja ini. Boring sangat ni! Awal pagi lagi, uncle datang bagi ikan. Macam biasa, kalau bangun pagi, gosok gigi, cuci muka, buat kopi untuk sarapan.” – Journal Intern
